Hello Frome Canoe Club, I imagine this question has been asked before. Is the Frome 'open access' for paddlers who are not in your club ? If not, what is the process, who are the land owners, that require notification. And finally, where is the highest point with nearby parking.

Hi ropetrick. We do not have an access agreement for the river Frome. We just get on and paddle. However, we only generally run the river between September and April. Access/egress points are - Next to our clubhouse at Market Yard in the centre of Frome (this is probably the highest access point and will be shallow in places between Welshmill weir and the junction with the river Mells in normal Summer levels).
- The field river left opposite Staplemead Creamery at Oldford.
- The field river right downstream of Woolverton bridge.
- Langham Farm at Rode. The club has an arrangement to paddle at Langham Farm for organised club sessions. At other times the farm should be contacted direct.
- Stowford Farm upstream from Farleigh Hungerford. We have used this as egress infrequently in the past but you need to arrange with the farm and pay per vehicle.
- Iford Bridge. River left below the bridge.
I'm not aware of any arrangement with the landowners at Oldford and Woolverton.

Hello JohnK, thank you for your comprehensive reply to my questions.
If I maybe so bold, I will ask another, do you paddle the river in the Autumn through to Spring because there is a good depth of water.
Or is there an historic reason ? ie fish are breeding, birds nesting.
I have looked at the river over the years, and it always looks inviting in a lovely English low land setting, I look forward to paddling it soon. Cheers.

We tend not to paddle it in the Summer because you'd have to portage the weirs, and it will be shallow in other places too. Also there are more people around, and as a group we try to keep a reasonably low profile. On your own you'd have less impact.
